What is grooming?

✔ Dog grooming ✔ Cat grooming

It’s no secret that people live in families. Family is essential for a person in order not to feel lonely and separated from society. Each family member takes care of each other and tries to help one another. When our family gets a pet, it also becomes a member of the family and has the right to care, protection, and complete care. And we must provide our pets (“little brothers”) with these basic elements of care.

Grooming is an inevitable part of general pet care. It consists of several procedures necessary to maintain high-quality hygiene and the overall health of our pets.

Let’s take a closer look at the basic grooming procedures:

Fur care

Fur care consists of three main steps:

  • Daily brushing. In fact, not all pet owners pay enough attention to this simple action. Your pet, like you, should be brushed regularly.

Pets with long fur should be brushed every day, during molting, even twice a day! It is important to use different combs (may differ in thickness and shape of the comb teeth), and you need to use a slicker brush. Brushing should be done in the direction of fur growth. It’s necessary to comb the paws with the tail, as well as the zones around the intimate area.

Special spray-conditioners can be used for brushing. These sprays contain the necessary components. For example: proteins, extracts of various useful herbs, and essential amino acids. In addition, they greatly facilitate the brushing process for the owner and pet and also eliminate static electricity.

  • Removal and prevention of hairballsl: It often happens that long-haired and fluffy pets have hairballs (the fur clumps together). This is very unpleasant and uncomfortable for the animals themselves because hairballs tighten the skin and cause pain.

If it has already happened – hairballs need to be carefully trimmed. In some cases, you can use special sprays to soften them.

To prevent this, measures are necessary. Daily brushing using different combs and slicker brushes are required. Some sprays strengthen the fur and moisturize it, which prevents confusion.

  • Fur cleansing: The best way to clean the fur is by bathing. However, you need to remember that the frequency of bathing depends on the breed and its lifestyle. For example, hairless cats need to be bathed quite often. Dogs that live in apartments usually only have their paws washed after a walk.

There are many special products for bathing pets, for example, shampoos. You should know that such means are very different – from everyday care to shampoos for the show to enhance the depth of the fur color and give it a shine). There are shampoos for different types of fur wool: for light and dark, for short and long, both universal and hypoallergenic. The best way to choose the right shampoo for your pet is to consult with a specialist.

If fur care seems too complicated for you, you can always consult a specialist in our salon “OH Grooming”

Pet haircut

It is known that fur is necessary for an animal as a protection not only from the cold, but also from heat, and other aggressive environmental influences. Moreover, it makes our pets beautiful and unique. So why should it be trimmed? In fact, under the untidy, thick fur a lot of diseases can hide, such as cysts, dermatitis, hives, mites and fleas, etc.

In addition, some breeds don’t have molting. For them, grooming is necessary. In summary, the haircut is required:

  • Firstly, for the health of the pet
  • Secondly, for the aesthetic pleasure of the owner and pet

After all, everyone enjoys boasting of an elegant, handsome, or beautiful pet, but certainly not a dirty, covered with hairballs animal that causes pity.

Pet bathing

Talking about bathing the animal, it’s important to understand that animals don’t sweat like humans. For example, the sweat glands of cats and dogs aren’t all over the body, like in humans, but rather on the pads of the paws and the nose. Cats have sweat glands around the anus cavity and nipples, on the lips and cheeks. Nature has provided our furry friends with protective sebum on the skin, which shouldn’t be washed off frequently. Therefore, our pets need bathing much less often than us. However, this doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t bathe them at all.

To learn how to properly bathe your pet, information about the importance of pet bathing, which products and means can be used, and which aren’t appropriate for it. You can find out on our website in the hygienic procedures section.

Oral cavity care

The oral cavity of our pet isn’t only a part of the digestive system. For example, the tongue is needed to cool the body when overheated. In humans, sweat glands perform this function. Teeth aren’t only a tool for tearing food, but also a great weapon for self-defense. Therefore, the health of the oral cavity should be treated no less carefully than anything else!

And, although animals, like humans, have veterinary dentists, proper hygiene and care of the oral cavity (including brushing teeth) help to keep teeth healthy of your pet for years and save on visits to the dentist!

Ears care

To keep your pet healthy and beautiful, it’s important to take ears care properly! Hygiene of the auricles is crucial for your pet because improper actions or neglect can lead to unpleasant consequences such as otitis, otodectosis, or even hematomas.

How to get your pet used to ear cleaning? Doing this at a young age works best. Even if there is no need to clean the ears, just imitate these actions with the pet. This will greatly help you and your pet to do the procedure correctly in the future.

Our groomers will demonstrate how to care for your pet’s ears properly and which tools to use during your consultation at “101 Dalmatians” salon.

Trimming

Another important procedure for our “little friends” is trimming. For pets, this procedure should be done once a month. However, it isn’t worth ignoring it the same way. Because claws grow constantly and if the animal doesn’t have an opportunity to grind them, they can turn up and grow into the paw pads. This can be very painful and can lead to inflammation.

Unfortunately, not everyone knows that the cats’ or dogs’ claws need to be trimmed! However, fewer people understand the complexity of this process. The problem is that the claws inside aren’t homogeneous, they have a fleshy base with capillaries – this is a pulp. And the more claws there are, the more pulp there will be. Therefore, they need to be trimmed carefully and in a certain area of the claw. It’s important not to cause pain and trouble to your “family friends”! For many people, it’s easier, and sometimes safer, to have a professional groomer perform this procedure.

Preventing parasites

Unfortunately, our fluffy friends are at a high risk of getting parasites. There are two types of parasites – external (mites and fleas), and internal (helminths, cryptosporidiosis, trichomoniasis). Even if the animal lives in the best conditions, the risk still exists. Therefore, prevention is the most effective way to fight parasites.

Of course, a grooming salon isn’t a veterinary clinic, and if the infection has already occurred, then the right decision is to go to a veterinary clinic! However, with regard to preventive measures, our specialists possess the capability to carry them out and provide you with useful recommendations.
