What is Trimming?

Trimming (from the English “trimming”) refers to the process of manually removing (plucking) mature but non-shedding fur. Many people think that pulling out fur is painful for an animal, but this is not a case, because only “dead hair” is removed.

What is trimming used for?

This procedure is necessary for animals with hard fur.

Thanks to trimming:

  • • fur renews faster;
  • • dead skin cells from the skin’s outer are removed, reducing the risk of skin inflammation;
  • • prevents the formation of “hairballs” (they are formed, among other things, when “dead” outer hair is in the undercoat and becomes entangled there);
  • • replaces molting for animals that hardly shed;
  • • positively affects the thickness and hardness of the fur;
  • • after trimming, the pet looks beautiful and well-groomed, the fur lying smoothly and beautifully on the body instead of tangling.

Before shows, plucking is a necessary procedure, because it doesn’t violate the natural structure of fur.

Types of Trimming

Trimming is divided into hygienic, cosmetic, and exhibition. What is the difference?

  • Hygienic (full) trimming: this type of trimming is performed to maintain health, particularly of the skin and fur. “Dead hair” is removed from the entire body except for the face, belly, and groin. It helps promote the proper growth and formation of the coat. Hygienic trimming is done every six months.

  • Cosmetic trimming (also known as “rolling” or light trimming): thinning the outer wool to maintain the correct level of coat. It’s done every 3 months.

  • Exhibition trimming: the main goal is to create an image and shape that highlights the beauty and all the features of the breed. Exhibition trimming is used accordingly before the exhibition.

Who needs trimming?

As mentioned above, trimming is necessary for breeds with hard fur, as well as an undercoat.

Most often, trimming is done on dogs, such as:

  • • Terriers;
  • •  Schnauzers;
  • • Wire Haired Dachshunds;
  • • English and American Cocker Spaniels.

For cats, these are the following breeds:

  • • British Longhair cats;
  • •  Rex;
  • • Orientals;
  • • Scottish Folds;
  • • Abyssinians.

It’s important to understand that these listed breeds are just the ones most frequently subjected to trimming, but not all of them require it. For more detailed information, click here

What is Stripping?

Stripping, also known as “non-natural molting.” It’s also the process of plucking out mature wool, it’s also a mechanical process, rather than a manual one. Unlike trimming (which is carried out manually), stripping involves the use of a specialized tool called a stripping knife or a stone for stripping (a kind of pumice stone). The essence and purpose of the procedure are the same as trimming – pulling out the “dead hair” of the wool. However, stripping is typically done during the molting period of the animal.

What kind of plucking method to use depends on various factors, such as the specific type of wool the animal has, how much time there is before the exhibition, etc. After both procedures, the pet should be thoroughly brushed.
