What to know
Do All Dogs Need Coat Care?
Not all dog breeds require regular trimming. For some breeds with a protective outer coat, haircutting is not recommended, as it can affect the coat’s natural structure and protective function. These breeds include:
- • Retrievers
- • Samoyeds
- • German Shepherds
- • Labradors
- • Malamutes
It’s common to comb out and use trimming and stripping for breeds without undercoat, such as Irish Water Spaniels, Poodle, and breeds with curly fur (Comondor, Bergamasco Shepherd Dog).
When should you trim your dog?
You can usually start trimming your dog’s fur at around three months of age.
However, if your puppy has long hair and tangles or mats begin to form, you can start earlier.
Adult dogs should be trimmed as needed, depending on their coat type and growth rate. It’s best if the first haircut is done in a professional dog salon, where specialists can make the experience safe and comfortable for your pet.
Types of dog haircuts
There are three main types of dog haircuts:
-
Hygienic Trimming. This is the most common and affordable type of haircut. The goal of hygienic trimming is to keep your dog clean, neat, and healthy — preventing parasites, matting, and unpleasant odors.
-
Model Haircut (Free Style). This type of haircut focuses on aesthetic preferences rather than breed standards. It’s a “free style” approach — based on the owner’s wishes and the creativity of an experienced pet stylist using professional tools.
-
Show Haircut (Exhibition Style). Unlike the previous type, a show haircut must strictly follow breed standards. Any deviation from the standard is unacceptable, so it’s best to entrust show preparation to a professional salon specialist with experience in exhibition grooming.
Dog Haircut & Coat Care Techniques

- • Clippervek (Clipper haircut): haircut using a special machine for trimming. The unique feature of this method is the result of a haircut, namely short fur (1.5-5mm). This method is suitable for different breeds and can be done both evenly and with transitions. It’s convenient for removing “hairballs”.
- • Fletvek (Flat haircut): the distinctive feature of these haircuts is short fur with smooth and unnoticed transformation to longer fur. It’s suitable for many breeds and looks very natural, for example, on Yorkshire Terriers. It can be done with a clipper machine or scissors, but scissors are more convenient for smooth transitions.
- • Blending: a feature of this method is using filing scissors. This type of haircut involves thinning out fur of different lengths, and it’s usually the final stage of the dog’s haircut. It gives the haircut a finished look.
- • Top-not: the distinctive feature of this technique is the use of various bows, pins, etc. It’s used both in model haircuts and show grooming for long-haired dogs. It can also be a required element at shows for dogs with long hair and bulging eyes.
What if my dog doesn’t want a haircut?
If a dog is unwilling to be groomed or becomes nervous at the sight of tools or when trying to carry out any manipulations with its fur, it’s essential to postpone the procedure for a few days. During this time, it’s important to interact with dogs calmly, avoiding frightening them, and consistently offering its favorite dainty to imitate the haircut process. In practice, after a few days (or possibly a week), the animal begins to react more calmly to a familiar situation. You can safely trim.
